The University Counseling Service has a strong commitment to meeting the needs of diverse people.

UCS is invested in creating a safe, inclusive, and affirming climate for all individuals and communities.

UCS is committed to hiring and retaining clinical staff who represent a wide range of cultural diversity, and who are dedicated to the intentional inclusion of multicultural competence in all areas of their work. Our staff reflects differences in racial and ethnic background, national origin, sexual identity, religion and spirituality, age, and gender. The entire staff shares our goal of providing sensitive, high quality services to diverse people. UCS offers psychotherapy in Mandarin and English.

We strive to create an environment where all people feel welcome.  As a staff, we define cultural diversity as personal or social identities based in cultural, individual, group, or role differences including, but not limited to, those based on race, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, mental health status, relational and family status, religion, spirituality, language, nationality, citizenship status, social class, economic status, veteran status, disability and ability, gender identity and expression, body type and size, as well as diverse ideas, values, and lifestyles.

In keeping with the mission and service commitment to diverse populations, UCS staff members regard multiculturally focused clinical services, outreach, and training as well as social justice work as key components of staff members’ roles and responsibilities. Staff members are engaged with other campus organizations and campus partners to create not only safe, but affirming services for U of Iowa students from all backgrounds but especially for those from underprivileged/underrepresented, and historically oppressed groups and communities.

We want you to know that we are available as a resource for you, and we are dedicated to helping foster a climate that is safe for all students on campus and within the community. If you are interested in speaking individually with a counselor or arranging for a facilitated discussion for your group, please call 319-335-7294.

UCS therapists are psychologists, licensed mental health therapists and social workers.  Each clinician adheres to the code of ethics from their professional organization.  The code of ethics for each organization are as follows:
