Heidi Schmitt, LISW

Assistant Director of Special Projects and Collegiate Recovery Program
Social Worker Practicum Coordinator
Biography

As the co-coordinator for the Collegiate Recovery Program (CRP), I look to support students considering recovery, in recovery, or in any stage of recovery from addiction. I work closely with my co-coordinator, Karen Grajczyk-Haddad in Student Wellness to manage our social media presence, facilitate support spaces and offer trainings on being a Recovery Ally. I work with students, faculty, and staff to provide referrals to the CRP and to off campus resources for substance use treatment. My goal for the CRP is to continue to see the community grow to help students feel connected at the University of Iowa and reduce the stigma associated with seeking support for substance use concerns. Education

  • 2015 – Licensed Independent Social Worker
  • 2012 – Master of Social Work, University of Iowa
  • 2010 – BA History and Interdisciplinary Studies, Coe College

Clinical/counseling interests:

I approach counseling as a collaborative process focused on enhancing and building upon the strengths of the client. I utilize cognitive behavioral therapy and dialectical behavior therapy in a collaborative approach in which the therapist and client work together to address the identified goals.  Additionally, I have training in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). My clinical interests include dual diagnosis (substance use disorders and mental illness), anxiety, depression, parenting and relationship concerns, mindfulness, adjustment to college and non-traditional students.

Multicultural interests:

Prior to joining UCS, my work experience was primarily in community mental health.  These experiences have guided my belief in collaboration and advocacy for all my clients. I believe that it is important to recognize and validate individual experiences and how they impact development socially, professionally and academically.

Outreach interest

I enjoy meeting students and working together to reduce the stigma associated with mental health.  Particularly, I enjoy talking about mindfulness, healthy relationship skills, anxiety, transition to college and general mental health concerns. I also help to coordinate the Collegiate Recovery Program (CRP) and I can provide outreach on general substance use concerns, as well as, the programming that the CRP offers.
