Looking for a fun way to connect with mental health resources? Come out to Fresh Check Day, hosted by University Counseling Service, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23, in the Iowa Memorial Union Main Lounge. This free mental health fair offers a hands-on experience to explore mental wellness while having fun with friends.
Fresh Check Day is a national program started by the Jordan Porco Foundation to encourage positive conversations about mental health and suicide prevention. In 2018, Iowa was recognized as an Outstanding Fresh Check Day Campus for our planning, engagement, and messaging. This year is the University of Iowa’s ninth Fresh Check Day, and we’re bigger than ever.
Fresh Check Day makes learning about mental health approachable and engaging, with activities such as playing a trivia game on suicide prevention, relieving stress with creative outlets, posting positive affirmations, petting a therapy dog, and more.
In addition, the UI has partnered with 32 organizations from campus and the community to bring you free food, music, games, and giveaways. And don’t forget—you’ll have a chance to win one of over 30 gift baskets just for showing up and engaging with the activities.
“Students love Fresh Check Day because it makes learning about mental health fun and engaging,” said UCS Director Michael Fletcher. “Whether you’re familiar with mental health resources or not, you’re guaranteed to leave with something new that can support you or someone you care about.”
This event is also a powerful opportunity to learn how you can make a difference on campus by supporting friends and peers who may be struggling. We can all play a role in preventing suicide on our campus, and that starts with being aware and learning ways to help. You matter in building a safer, healthier community.
