Jiyoung Shin, M.A.

Biography

Clinical/counseling interests

I primarily approach counseling from an integrative approach, incorporating aspects of cognitive-behavioral approaches (CBT, ACT, DBT) and emotion-focused approaches with a positive psychology lens. By integrating evidence-based approaches and tailoring counseling to each client’s unique needs, I strive to create a safe and supportive therapeutic environment where clients can explore their challenges, gain insight and work towards positive change. My clinical interests include emotional issues (depression, anxiety, stress after adverse life events), interpersonal issues, trauma, grief and loss, cultural adjustment, and personal growth.

I am dedicated to being a compassionate collaborator with clients in addressing their presenting issues. Addtionally, as an advocate of social justice, I am attentive to systems and contexts that impact a person’s experience. I am committed to encouraging and supporting clients in discovering their own resources and strengths, replacing maladaptive cognitions and behaviors, and facilitating personal growth.

Multicultural interests

I am committed to working with clients and their diverse cultural backgrounds and social contexts. I aim to create a culturally sensitive counseling environment. I am passionate about working with international students in college settings and collaborating with them to thrive with their own resources and strengths.

Professional Affiliations

I am a certified counselor with the Korean Counseling Psychological Association in South Korea.
