I approach counseling as a strengths based, collaborative process in which both client and therapist bring their individual knowledge and skills together to help the client move forward in their life. I incorporate both interpersonal and cognitive behavior therapies in my approach and believe that the therapeutic relationship should provide a supportive and safe space for clients to discuss any number of issues. I enjoy exploring and problem solving with clients in order to empower them to achieve their goals and help them to gain insight into their own internal and external resources for change.
My clinical interests include anxiety, perfectionism, life adjustment difficulties, women’s issues, individual and couples therapy, diversity issues, non-traditional students, work/life balance, relationship and parenting issues, grief and loss, identity concerns relating to gender and sexual orientation, healthy relationships and sexual concerns such as abuse, dissatisfaction and dysfunction.
My educational background and my prior work experience in a community mental health center have instilled in me a strong desire to serve in paving the road to social justice for all peoples. I believe it is important to acknowledge the impact each individuals own culture and environment has had on their personal and professional development as well as acknowledging the challenges and barriers that same culture and environment have created for the individual. I consistently strive to advocate and educate others by encouraging them to examine their own thoughts, beliefs and values as well as utilize an empathic lens to view others. I have a strong interest in advocacy issues related to first generation college students, classism, sexual orientation and gender identity and domestic violence. I see my primary advocacy role as working towards erasing stigmatization of those who seek help for mental health concerns.
